How long does it take to make a knife?

2 to 4 weeks, depending on the style and materials chosen. Depending on the style of the blade, Some are shaped through stock removal and other forged to shape. Then blade is ground and heat-treated, it is then ready for a handle. As an example, hunting knife style handles are either a full tang or hidden tang. You can personalize your knife by picking the handle material, handle liner (optional) pins, and guard material if applicable. Then you could add a logo etching, which could be a family crest, name, or special date, to the blade finish. The outcome is sure to be a one-of-a-kind heirloom.

I'm not really sure what Materials or Design I want.  Can you help me with some selections?

We absolutely can help you with choosing your materials and design. We can help you determine the shape of your knife depending on your use for it. We can also explain the different types of handle materials and their different properties. Anything from wood, antler, micarta and G10 and many other handle materials are fair game!

Are your knives forged?

There are two methods of making handmade knives. The first method consists of forging. The steel is heated and hammered then grinded into its final shape.  The second method is called “stock removal” which consists of taking a bar of High Carbon steel and grinding material from the steel until a knife is formed.  I use both depending on style of the blade.  I begin with a bar or rod of steel which I cut, file, grind, sand and polish into a beautiful knife.

Are your knives heat treated?

Yes, all my knives are heat treated. It is necessary to heat treat knives to increase the hardness of the steel and to make it possible for the blade to keep its edge.  The heat-treating process is a crucial step in knife making.  A knife with poor “hardening” can be too hard and the edge may chip, or the knife may break.  If it’s too soft, it won’t hold a good edge.
